Embrace who you are

Joseph Merz

Have you ever wondered what your best asset is? I always thought mine was my height. Well, it’s not my height. It isn’t actually any one thing. Your best asset is you. It’s everything about you.

Your unique self. All your weird ways. The way you laugh. The way you cry. The way you handle fear, anxiety, shame, trauma, excitement.

We live in a world that has a changed a lot in recent years. Since the industrial revolution, we’ve flown through technological advancements. Digital and social developments have forever changed the face of marketing and communications.

But in my opinion, it hasn’t all been for the better.

A study in 2016 of 1,787 people aged between 19 and 32 found a clear link between social media usage and symptoms of depression. The more the usage, the more hopeless, worthless, and helpless the individuals felt.

We’re all hit with an unbelievable amount of advertising each day. A constant bombardment of brands and beautiful people telling us we’re missing out. We need product X, or service Y. Our life won’t be completed without it.

Now, think about your social media feeds. They’re a lot like highlight reels, where most individuals work to only post the best of their lives (a false reality). Few people are comfortable sharing their daily realities. But it’s these realities that truly define us, because more than 99% experience similar things.

This is where we have a major disconnect. First, we’re constantly reminded that we’re lacking the things we need to be complete. Second, we’re shown a constant stream of a false reality. In my opinion, these two things combined are slowly eating away at the fabric of our society.

It sounds crazy but we need a new revolution. A revolution of people embracing who they are, and a true reality. People not afraid to show the world that their lives include total chaos. That their houses aren’t always immaculate.

I’m incredibly fortunate to have the things I have, but for the reasons above I make a point of showing my daily realities – and I encourage you to do the same.

It’s not about what you have, it’s about the fact that what you have should never define you. No amount of privilege can change the fact that at the end of the day you are still a human being.

So, if you take anything from this let it be that your unique self is your best asset. Love it. Embrace it. And show the world your true reality.
